Senator to introduce legislation preventing people from using welfare benefits to buy legal weed

A Republican lawmaker is promising to introduce legislation to prevent people from using federal welfare benefits to buy legal weed after finding out about a “loophole” in the current law that allows for these purchases.
In a letter addressed to Budget Committee ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell responded to an earlier inquiry by the senator and told him that HHS has no authority to stop people from using their Electronic Benefit Transfer cards in stores that sell pot.
