Whither Hempfest? Only Higher, Organizers Say

Whither Hempfest? Only Higher, Organizers Say

Over the years, Seattle’s beloved Hempfest has become a little more legalized, popularized, and commercialized, and that’s not a bad thing. Polls say about one-fifth of Hempfest attendees come from out of state, which means they’re putting Seattle on the map. The festival also pumped over $18 million dollars into the local economy last year, according to a study done by the University of Washington.

As more pot shops pop up and saturate the market, and Hempfest adds a new “business mixer” to its festival, one has to wonder, is Hempfest’s identity changing? Is it really a “protestival” if pot is already legal? If every new business in the industry is trying to get a piece of the pie? If even the SPD are supportive of its attendees, bringing peace offerings in the form of Doritos?
